Location and Surrounding Area. Castello Barbarossa was originally a fortress commissioned by the Holy Roman Emperor Federico Barbarossa during the wars between the Empire and the Papacy. It dates back to the 12th century and today, its commanding position offers peace and far-reaching views over the sublime Assisi countryside. It is situated on the edge of Mount Tezio Park, which offers simple walks, more challenging hiking trails and splendid views across the Tiber valley.
The nearest city is Perugia; an enchanting university city famous for its art, culture, summer jazz festival and chocolate! Perugia was home to the painter Pietro Vannuci, known as Perugino and teacher to Raphael the great Renaissance artist. Vannuci's frescoes still decorate the Sala del Cambio and there are various paintings in the National Gallery of Umbria in Perugia.
The area offers spectacular wines; for example Montefalco for its Sagrantino wine and Montepulciano for its Vino Nobile. Castello Barbarossa offers both wine tasting and local wine tours, including to Chianti.
The nearby Castello di Antognolla golf course has 18 holes and was designed by Robert Trent Jones. Not to be missed is an exciting truffle hunting expedition in the woods with enthusiastic truffle hounds!
Perugia, Florence and Rome international airports are a respective 20 minute, 90 minute and 2 hour drive away and Perugia less than half an hour distant.
The Property. This exclusive castle offers guests the opportunity of relaxing in five star, hotel-like accommodation with fully trained staff. It has been lovingly restored by architect Domenico Minchilli, who used an archaeological survey and original drawings to accurately recreate the property, which covers 5 hectares. The interior designer, Martyn Lawrence Bullard, has managed to strike genius in the unique arrangement of each room with its Renaissance furniture. Castello Barbarossa boasts eight double bedrooms with en suite bathroom and private living room with open fireplace. Each bedroom suite has been individually refurbished with luxurious fabrics and bed linens and the enormous bathrooms have marble fixtures and heated stone floors.
The vast sitting room has an open fireplace and contains rich tapestries, velvet cushions and comfortable antique leather chairs to sink into. The wooden-beamed dining room contains a long, antique table for a truly medieval dining experience surrounded by works of art.
