In less than thirty minutes by car, you can easily reach Macerata, a sleepy university town surrounded by lovely countryside. Set amid gentle green hills, Macerata is a charming provincial town with a wonderfully preserved hilltop centre and an animated student population. Its old town, threaded through by narrow cobblestone streets lined with honey-coloured brick palazzi, springs to life in summer for the town's celebrated month-long opera festival.

In less than one hour by car, you can easily reach Ancona, the capital of the Marche. This bustling city serves as the main gateway to the area, both by plane and ferry, giving it the atmosphere of a Mediterranean frontier. The influence of the East is also evident in some of its earliest architectural attractions. Don't miss the Cathedral of San Ciriaco, perched on the hill above the port, where parts of the Byzantine mosaic floor of the original 6th-century church can still be seen.
