Torre del Mare – Sperlonga - Latium
5 Bedrooms
Torre del Mare at Torre Scissura is a sea side residence built in the early 60’s by Alighiero Bottaro, engineer, sailor and great lover of the sea. It is located not so far away from the charming city of Gaeta, a centre of great historical and cultural interest, on the promontory called “Le Scissure”.
For a long time Mr. Bottaro had been seeking a place where “the sky seems to fade to the sea”. Once he found it, he built his dream house there. The sea all around this promontory is the most beautiful and sought after along the whole Lazio coast.
A stay in this villa allows one to feel the contact with the creative spirit which inspired its architectural design. The villa rises high above the coast facing the sea, and the Torre Scissura - a tower built in the 16th Century as a defensive work against the Saracen pirates - captures the attention. On either side of the tower, which is inside the property, two paths, passing through the Mediterranean shrub, lead down from the sunbathing area to the sea.
These easy and safe downhill paths do not disturb the quiet and the beauty of nature and some sunbathing areas close to the sea allow full contact with the sea and privacy in sunbathing.
The Villa is built on several levels, and the upper terrace is the privileged point of view for an enviable view ranging from the open sea and the promontory, to the nearby beaches of Torre Scissura and Torre Sant’Agostino. There are five bedrooms, for ten persons in all, - all of them offering an astonishing view of the sea. The master bedroom has old style furniture and a wrought iron double bed made at the end of the 19th Century. It has a pretty little loggia where one can relax in front of the magnificent sea view. A little room off the corridor separates the bedroom from the other rooms, and leads to the bathroom which has a bathtub. Along the corridor there are the two double rooms - one has two single beds that can be joined and the other has a solid wood bunk bed - and the bathroom with a small bathtub. On the same floor, in another wing of the Villa, is the fourth bedroom, with a double bed, in colonial style: a corridor separates this room from the others. It is like the first bedroom, in that it is isolated and has its own bathroom with a shower. Next to it there is a door that leads to a covered terrace overlooking the south western side of the promontory. On the roof there is the “Torrino”, a pretty double bedroom with its own bathroom and its own private entrance. This arrangement allows contact with the natural elements.
A stone stairway leads to the ground level where there are two large finely furnished living rooms - separated by an imposing arch - and a glass enclosed patio ornamented with wrought iron. A large marble bathtub, placed during the building of Torre del Mare, is the symbol of the care and devotion for this place, considered so precious.
On the other side of the living rooms there is the kitchen, with majolica tiles in white and blue vegetable designs, and red tiles for the floors; it is completely furnished, and is equipped with refrigerator, washing machine and dish washer. A small bathroom is located next to the kitchen.
Outside the Villa there are five terraces, almost all covered, and sunbathing areas with sun beds, flowerbeds and flourishing trees which gradually mix in with the surrounding nature as they descend toward the sea. At the main entrance of the property there is a double car parking lot shaded from the sun by a vine covered arbour.
Outside the kitchen, a sturdy wooden bench and a large table allow one to take meals in front of a beautiful scenery that ranges from the Monte Circeo promontory, to the PontineIslandsand to the Ischia Isle: it is like being on the bow of a ship at almost twenty meters above the sea.
At a very short distance from the villa there is a beach – that you can reach with the car or even on foot – and guests of the Villa can take advantage of a special discount with the well equipped bathing establishment “Le Scissure”, that can offer entrance, parking for the car, sun beds and beach umbrellas for rent. There is also a bar-restaurant hollowed out of the rocks.
