Villa Baronessa - Amalfi - Amalfi Coast

5 Bedrooms - Pool

Location and Surrounding Area. Villa Baronessa is perched right above the water and is ideal for a group of friends or a larger family wishing to immerse themselves in the joys of this breathtaking area of Southern Italy. The Amalfi Coastline is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and has always been a desirable destination of the elite; from the artistic days of the Grand Tour to illustrious visitors such as Escher, Jackie Kennedy and Pablo Neruda. The romantic town of Amalfi, after which the Amalfi Coastline takes its name, is characterised by its fascinating vertical aspect. Yes, it's snuggled into and right up the cliffside and the gorgeous alleyways, whitewashed houses and stone steps are a photographer's dream. Amalfi was once the first of the Four Maritime Republics of Italy and for a long time it was the most important trading place with the East. Amalfi was famous for its paper making and you can spend several hours in the dedicated Handmade Paper Museum. You're sure to find yourself at some point enjoying a traditional Italian gelato ice cream in the central piazza while you gaze in wonder at the magnificent steps leading up to the stunningly striped, Arab-Norman facade of the Cathedral of St. Andrew.

Among the countless incredible places to visit in the area, perhaps Ravello and Positano stand out for the first time visitor. Ravello, at 350 metres above sea level, offers both unforgettable architecture and scenic beauty. The 11th century Cathedral and Villa Cimbrone are magnificent and a summer music festival is held each in the year in the gardens of the 13th century Villa Rufolo. D.H. Lawrence wrote Lady Chatterley's Lover here and the town has been frequented over the years by the likes of Greta Garbo and Winston Churchill.

Positano has been home to intellectuals and artists, who have wandered up and down the picturesque labyrinths of stone steps and among the pastel-coloured houses for centuries. The town today offers sophisticated shopping, charming restaurants, breathtaking views, several glamorous beaches and lots of lemons in every shape and form. Meandering through the arches and passageways, you'll find local shoemakers who will make you a pair of customized sandals and the majolica tiled dome of the Church of Santa Assunta can be seen from almost every corner of the town. Just off the shore of Positano are three tiny islands, Li Galli or as some people call them, Le Sireneuse. Legend has it that they were once inhabited by Parthenope and other enticing sirens who seduced passing sailors with their song. The world famous ballet dancer, Rudolf Nureyev purchased the islands and spent the last years of his life here.

Sorrento is another magnificent destination, surrounded by dramatic cliffs and overlooking the twinkling lights of the Bay of Naples. Mount Vesuvius can be seen towering over the city of Naples on the other side of the water. The town itself is a full of fun and offers pretty streets selling speciality lace, leatherwork, inlaid wood and delicious local limoncello.

Villa Baronessa is less than an hour and a half from the city of Naples and its international airport. Mount Vesuvius, the archaeological site at Pompeii and Sorrento are about an hour's drive, Positano is half an hour down the coast and Ravello is just 20 minutes up the hill.

The Property. This magnificent property offers absolutely breathtaking sea views from the balconies and superb interior design. You'll immediately feel at home amongst the sumptuous, designer fabrics and furnishings. The property sleeps up to ten guests in five double bedrooms, each with a king size bed and a balcony area with sea views. You can also have the flexible option of adding a single bed to four of the five bedrooms if necessary. Three of the bedrooms are in the main house and the two adjacent cottages each offer a private solution for two couples with king size beds, ensuite bathrooms and sitting areas. The en suite bathrooms are splendidly spacious in all of the bedrooms.

The large sitting room is in the main house and there is plenty of room for everyone to gather together of an evening. The French windows lead out onto the balcony and let in those refreshing summer breezes with the scent of lemon groves for which this area is famous. You can dine al fresco as the locals do out on the terrace and watch the twinkling lights of the yachts on the sea below. Or why not get a private chef to organise your evening meal and sit back with a glass of something lovely as you put your feet up after a long day sight-seeing? If you decide to try your hand at rustling up some authentic, Italian dishes, you'll find everything you need in the fully equipped kitchen.

You'll probably be spending a lot of your time in the elegance of the 36 metre long, infinity swimming pool or just soaking up the Mediterranean sun on the sunbeds. The gardens are relaxing and well-tended plus there is lots of room for children to let off steam too.
