Apulia Calabria and Basilicata - Martina Franca
Trulli Martina – Martina Franca - Apulia
4 Bedrooms – Pool
What better way to live the traditional lifestyle of Puglia than in this set of seven beautifully restored trulli overlooking the magical Valle d'Itria? The property is less than a kilometre from the baroque beauty of Martina Franca with her splendid artistic treasures, pretty little streets and magnificent buildings. There is plenty to do in the evenings; take your pick from the stylish wine bars or exceptional restaurants and let's not forget the Festival della Valle d'Itria, an annual opera festival held here in July/August.
If the art of good eating is an important element in Italian life, then in Puglia, it becomes a quasi-mystical experience. The olive oil is arguably the best in the country, the wines are excellent and are being increasingly noticed on international wine circuits. Martina Franca is known for its DOC white wines in particular. The fresh fish and sea food are exquisite and the style of cooking is generally very simple, which brings out the wholesome, natural flavours of the locally grown produce.
Nearby Cisternino, like Martina Franca and Alberobello, is marvellous example of an old-world town that has changed very little over the centuries. The historical centre is absolutely delightful with its whitewashed houses nestling along narrow streets and elegant piazzas that are perfect for an evening aperitif whilst watching the world go by. There are various buildings of notable architectural interest including the 13th century Norman-Swabian tower and statue of San Nicola and the 14th century Church of San Nicola to name but two.
The fabled white city (Città Bianca) of Ostuni is a must on anyone's destination list. It rises high on a plateau overlooking the sea and you can spend hours getting lost in the maze of narrow lanes only to find yourself back at the cathedral at the top. The nearby coastline boasts pristine, sandy beaches and turquoise waters.
Polignano al Mare is a coastal gem perched high on the cliffs overlooking the sea. It was originally a Greek settlement and features alluring alleyways that meander through white washed houses. The restaurants are very good and many have outdoor eating areas for enjoying the fresh, local produce as you listen to the sound of the waves lapping on the pretty beach below.
The Trulli Martina are about half an hour from the long stretches of sandy beaches on the eastern Adriatic Sea and half an hour from the spectacular beaches on the western Ionic coastline. To stay in this lovely property is an ideal way to experience the sublime simplicity of the real Puglia.
The international airports of Bari and Brindisi are about an hour's drive away, Cisternino is about 15 minutes away, Alberobello 20 minutes, Ostuni 24 km, Polignano al Mare less than 40 km and the city of Taranto about 30 km.
The Property. The Trulli Martina sleep up to eight guests in four double bedrooms and has four bathrooms, two of which are en suite. Two of the bedrooms have pretty French windows leading out onto the patio areas. One of the marvellous features of trulli is that they stay remarkably cool in summer yet remain cozy and warm in winter. Each room does, however, have air conditioning and heating if necessary. The décor and restoration work was completed by an Italian architect team with interior designer and both the interior and exterior are perfectly in keeping with the simplicity of trulli; gentle, natural hues reminiscent of the surrounding countryside.
There are two comfortable sitting rooms, one with an original stone fireplace, dining area and well-equipped kitchen.
The secluded gardens extend over more than a hectare and are dotted with beautiful old olive trees. There is a barbecue and the chemical-free swimming pool measures 12m x 4m. The two shady gazebos with sofas, tables and chairs are idyllic for summer, al fresco relaxing and dining. The property faces west down the Valley d'Itria so gorgeous sunsets are a guaranteed backdrop for evening aperitifs or dinners.
