MASSERIA POGGIARDO

Location and Surrounding Area. This marvellous masseria (farmhouse) is set in the middle of one of the most beautiful areas of the authentic Salento in Puglia. It is an area where the people still live traditional lifestyles and enjoy delicious, high-quality, local foods and wines. In addition to the stunning natural beauty and gorgeous beaches, the area is significant for its local archaeological finds.

The turquoise waters in the sheltered cove at Porto Badisco make for safe swimming and excellent snorkelling. According to Virgil, Porto Badisco was the site of Aeneas’s first landing in Italy after his escape from Troy but some historians dispute the fact and suggest the Roman harbour of Castro instead. Castro is a picturesque coastal fishing village with the historical centre up on the hill and the lively marina below. The nearby coastline is studded with pretty caves, perhaps the most famous being the spectacular Grotta Zinzulusa limestone caves.

The city of Otranto is offers all the splendours of an original Greek settlement. The city's story is perhaps best told in the cathedral with its large-scale mosaics dating back to the 12th century and the bones of the 813 martyrs displayed behind the altar. The city is set on the spectacular Adriatic coastline and also offers gorgeous, sandy beaches and lively beach clubs.

Beautiful baroque Lecce has to be seen to be believed. It's the perfect destination for wandering around the little lanes and admiring the distinctive 17th century architecture. It has a delightful historical centre and an excavated Roman amphitheatre.

The Masseria Poggiardo is just outside the village of Santa Cesarea Terme and about 15 km from Otranto. It is less than 5 km from both Porto Badisco and Castro. Lecce is about a half an hour drive (35 km). The international airport of Brindisi is about an hour's drive from the Masseria.

The Property. The Masseria has been completely renovated to luxurious standards and covers three floors. The materials are all authentic and are strictly in keeping with the local traditional structures. It sleeps up to 40 guests in total; 16 people in three enormous suites and two double bedrooms in the main farmhouse, 16 people in four, double suites in the nearby olive grove and a further eight guests in 2 trulli, also situated in the olive grove.

The immaculate gardens offer scented walks among the Mediterranean trees surrounding the magnificent swimming pool situated in front of the main villa. The swimming pool comes fully equipped with a furnished sunbathing area and shady gazebos.

Main house

First double bedroom (35 m2) with private bathroom and exclusive use of large, furnished terrace. This bedroom has lovely views over the gardens.
Second double bedroom (35 m2) with private bathroom and exclusive use of large, furnished terrace. This bedroom has breathtaking views over the swimming pool.
Poggiardo suite: 100 m2 of luxurious, private suite with stone vaulted ceilings. This suite can comfortably sleep up to four people in two communicating, double bedrooms. One of the bedrooms even has a fireplace. The suite features a sumptuous bathroom with a circular bath tub and a huge, private, furnished terrace (160 m2), which overlooks the swimming pool and olive grove.
Corner suite: 80 m2 of spectacular loft living for up to four people. In addition to the double bed in the sleeping area, there are two sofa beds in the living room. There is a large bathroom with a shower and bath tub for two people plus the suite faces over the swimming pool.
Fireplace suite: Another large loft area (90 m2) with beds for up to four guests. Both sleeping areas have double beds and one has its own fireplace. There is a spacious living areas with sofas and a large bathroom with shower and bath tub. The suite overlooks the swimming pool.
4 Garden suites. There are four splendid, independent suites located about 70 m from the main house in the peace and quiet of the olive grove. Each suite offers about 70 m2 of accommodation for up to four people with a double bed in the sleeping area and two sofa beds in the living space. There is a double bath tub and a shower plus a central fireplace, which separates the sleeping and living areas of each loft. The lofts are filled with sunshine and each has a private, furnished patio measuring about 20 m2.

2 Trulli. There are two gorgeous old trulli (traditional, circular, stone dwellings) in the olive grove, each offering about 70 m2 of accommodation for up to four guests. They are situated about 70m from the main villa and offer guests the opportunity of living in close contact with the surrounding nature. These trulli were once used by the local farmers and have been transformed into exceptionally comfortable living quarters. Each trullo has a living room with two single beds and a small kitchen, a large and airy double bedroom, a bathroom and exclusive use of a private patio furnished with tables, chairs and a barbecue.
