In just fifteen minutes by car, you can easily reach Scicli, the most authentic and relaxed of the Val di Noto’s showpiece Baroque towns. Its relatively compact historic center is awash with cultural sights, from beautiful churches and aristocratic palazzi to eclectic museums and a time-warped apothecary. The town makes regular cameos on the hit TV series “Inspector Montalbano” and tourists can visit two of the show’s sets inside Palazzo Municipio. The villa is also a few kilometers from Modica: after the 1963 earthquake, the city was so damaged that it was largely rebuilt in the Sicilian Baroque style.

After the 1963 earthquake, Ragusa was so damaged that a new town was built on a high plateau to the west. Many buildings in the old town were repaired and rebuilt, however, so both towns show a marked Baroque influence that characterizes its tourist attractions today. Like the newer town above, the Old Town of Ragusa, a quiet quarter of narrow streets known as Ragusa Ibla, was also largely rebuilt in the Baroque style after the 1963 earthquake, so you will see examples of 18th-century architecture scattered among other buildings that survived before the earthquake.

In less than one hour by car, you can reach Noto, a spectacular Baroque city in the province of Syracuse and an architectural paradise with one of the most beautiful historic centers in Sicily.
