Villa Montalcino – Montalcino - Tuscany

6 Bedrooms – Pool

Location and Surrounding AreaVilla Montalcino is a gorgeous Tuscan property set in arguably the most stunning area of the Chianti region. The marvellous natural scenery of the surrounding Val d'Orcia has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site for years. It is the very same, almost untouched landscape so beloved of the masters of the Sienese School of painting during the 13th, 14th and 15th centuries; rolling hillsides, cypress trees, vineyards, clusters of olive groves and magnificent castles. The villa is close to several famous vineyards producing some of the world's finest wines: the Chianti Classico, Brunello di Montalcino, Nobile di Montepulciano and Tignanello for example. The Brunello di Montalcino, has been produced in the hills around Montalcino since the early 14th century, partly due to the fact that Montalcino has the warmest and driest climate in Tuscany. The village of Montalcino has a marvellous historical centre.

This glorious area of the Val d'Orcia is within easy reach of many of the marvels that Tuscany has to offer. It's only a short drive to the wonders of the UNESCO World Heritage Site of the Renaissance town of Pienza and the luxurious hot spring thermal baths in the tiny Roman hamlet of Bagno Vignoni. The Russian director filmed most of his 1983 film, Nostalghia here at Bagno Vignoni and the original water source forms a magnificent centre piece to the hamlet. Bagno Vignoni is on the outskirts of the larger village of San Quirico d'Orcia. The village lies on the ancient Via Francigena pilgrim route and is also home to various churches of architectural interest.

The whole area is steeped in history and offers timeless villages perched precariously on the hillsides. Don't miss the unforgettable San Gimignano with its high medieval towers or Suvereto, arguably one of Italy's most beautiful villages. Siena is medieval gem, famous for its architecture, the Campo central piazza and the Palio horse race, which is held twice every summer. The Palio and the Campo piazza both featured in the James Bond Quantum of Solace film and as you sip a cappuccino in the piazza, it's hard not to slip into film-star mode as you watch the world go by.

Castiglion del Bosco features a superb, private 18-hole golf course designed by the legendary British Open winner, Tom Weiskopf. The course is suitable for players of all abilities yet manages to offer challenging games for professionals as far as the 19th Brunello hole. The club house is situated in a beautifully restored farmhouse on the estate and includes a bar, a pro-shop and adjacent practicing facilities.

The property is only 5 km from the nearest village of Montalcino, which offers the necessary shops and a post office. Bagno Vignoni, San Quirico d'Orcia and Pienza are both about 20 km away, coastal Tuscany 50 km, Siena 60 km and Florence 110 km. The exclusive Castiglion Golf Club is only 5 minutes from the house. Florence international airport is about an hour and a half away.

The Property. Villa Montalcino is an aristocratic farmhouse spread out over approximately two hectares of land. The villa is one of the manors of the acclaimed 15th century Argiano Castle. Today Villa Monalcino is one of the most beautiful villas in the Montalcino area. It is a result of loving restoration works, which have adhered the original structures and shapes, successfully blending the fascination of a simple life and the owner's careful eye for details.

This elegant old country villa sleeps up to 12 guests with the added possibility of an extra room on the ground floor if required. The villa features wooden ceilings with exposed beams and carefully preserved terracotta floors. It is characterized by a U-shaped structure, with the main house built around a charming central courtyard. The interior has been lovingly restored while maintaining the original characteristics of the property.

The ground floor accommodates the large living room (120 m2) which is heated by a beautiful Tuscan fireplace, two sumptuous kitchens, a dining room, a study, two double bedrooms and another bathroom. All of the rooms on the ground-floor rooms open out onto an internal courtyard shaded by an American grape arbour where basil, rosemary and climbing roses release gloriously intense fragrances. On the first floor, there are two eloquently-furnished living rooms, a library and four double bedrooms, each with its own private bathroom. A unique view of the Tuscan landscape can be enjoyed from each window on the first floor. You can also see the pool, the roses and across the famous vineyards of Montalcino which stretch to Monte Amiata.

The house and pool face one of the most enchanting and intense views of the entire Val d’Orcia and the extensive gardens embellished by perfumed climbing roses and lavender bushes create the perfect setting for this wonderful holiday villa. A truly extraordinary vegetable garden allows the guests of Villa Montalcino to savour a wide range of seasonal fruit and vegetables, which are best accompanied by Brunello di Argiano wine, local olive oil and traditional Amiata cheese. The present owner's mother continues to follows the family tradition and produces some of the finest olive oil and wine in the region. A vast array of vineyards and olive groves extend over the surrounding area for almost as far as the eye can see.

The live-in staff are in an apartment with a separate entrance in the back of the house.
