Location and Surrounding Area. Perched on a hill on the Sicilian island of Pantelleria, a hidden paradise in the Mediterranean Sea, this exclusive six-bedroom property is ideally located to offer complete privacy and tranquility to its guests, providing a unique escape for those who want to discover this secret volcanic island which is home to rocky beaches and caves to explore, aquamarine thermal pools to swim in, and bountiful supply of olives and wine to devour. Located 100 km off the coast of Sicily and 60 km east of Tunisia, with year-round beautiful weather thanks to the constant wind blowing from North Africa, Pantelleria is the perfect place to while away a few weeks in the summer months.
Instead of classic sandy beaches to lie on, the island of Pantelleria boasts gorgeous swimming spots, including the famous Balata dei Turchi bay on the southern tip, Martingana in the southeast, and Kattibuale to the north, where you can relax and sunbathe on shiny black volcanic slabs. To get out on the water, hire a boat along the promenade in the harbor of Pantelleria Centro, and sail past the cove of Cala Levante to the spectacular Arco dell’Elefante, a striking rock formation in the shape of a giant elephant and the island’s most iconic symbol.
Pantelleria’s nutrient-rich volcanic soil has helped the flora adapt to the sparse rainfall: evidence of its fiery origins, which date back some 250.000 years, lingers in the hot springs studding the seabed just off the coast. Make the most of the island’s volcanic landscape by visiting one of its thermal hot springs and indulging some skin-purifying mud-bathing. One of the most popular sites is the Specchio di Venere, or Venus’ Mirror, so-named because the locals believe the Goddess of Love once stopped here to admire her beauty: the 39-foot-deep lake has thermal waters and natural mud baths, and is part of a nature preserve where you will also find running trials.
If you are a little more on the adventurous side, we recommend making the tricky cliff-side trek down to the Laghetto delle Ondine, a natural pool carved out of the rock. After a dip, choose between some of the island’s best restaurants for dinner. Eating like a local is the only option in Pantelleria, as its restaurants all serve similar fare and are blissfully low on ingredients grown on the island, with plenty of eggplants, olives, tomatoes and capers, as well as fish shipped over from Sicily and the world-famous Passito di Pantelleria dessert wine.
Il Dammuso is 254 km from Palermo Falcone-Borsellino Airport, 456 km from Comiso Airport, and 483 km from Catania-Fontanarossa Airport. Balata dei Turchi and Martingana are 9 km from the villa, Cala Levante is 10 km, Arco dell’Elefante is 11 km, Specchio di Venere is 12 km, Pantelleria and Kattibuale are 14 km, and Laghetto delle Ondine is 15 km.
The Property. Located on the sun-kissed island of Pantelleria and surrounded by Mediterranean vegetation of palm trees and olive groves, Il Dammuso effortlessly combines the luxury of a villa and the raw beauty of a dammuso, providing a unique retreat for those seeking complete privacy and pure relaxation in Sicily. Boasting dazzling views over the Mediterranean Sea, this exclusive property can accommodate up to twelve guests, offering six double bedrooms and four bathrooms (three with shower and one with bathtub) spread over five dammusi. Standing out among the lava rock and Mediterranean vegetation with their dry-stone walls, these typical homes sit on a single floor with undulating roofs as symbols of the slow and steady pace of yesteryear.
Collected under the same property, the five dammusi are united by a lush palm-filled garden where you will find a magnificent 18-meter swimming pool and a spacious poolside area equipped with unique sun loungers inviting guests to sit back and enjoy the charming panorama at sunset. Standing on the edge of a stunning valley surrounded by Mediterranean vegetation, the garden also boasts generous al fresco lounge and dining areas where guests can intimately enjoy traditional Italian dishes. From the shady terrace under the pergola, guests can gaze over the olive trees and the crystal-clear waters of the Mediterranean Sea.
Combining pure architectural lines with simple and modern interiors, the main dammuso boasts a spacious living room furnished with comfortable sofas and a fully-equipped kitchen. The main dammuso also houses two comfortable double bedrooms featuring en-suite bathroom. Located next to the main dammuso, a separate building houses a second fully-equipped kitchen at the guests’ disposal to ensure the most comfortable stay. Accessed by the garden, the third dammuso features a comfortable living room where guests can relax and enjoy a glass of Passito di Pantelleria, two double bedrooms characterized by a minimalist design, and an exceptional bathroom.
Through the garden, guests can also access the fourth and fifth dammuso: one houses a comfortable double bedroom, while the other houses a double bedroom complete with en-suite bathroom. Both bedrooms boast a minimalist design, paying homage to the building’s original nature and heritage. The thick walls, narrow doors and small windows protect residents from the relentless sun and the harsh winds, creating a cozy and intimate atmosphere. Wireless Internet access and air conditioning throughout the villa make this property complete and perfect for even the most demanding guests. The villa also features a laundry room and a garage for the exclusive use of the villa’s guests.
