POPE APARTMENT - ROME
2 Bedrooms
Location and Surrounding Area
Situated in an iconic location overlooking Piazza Navona in the heart of Rome, this luxurious two-bedroom apartment is just steps away from the city’s most exclusive dining, shopping, and entertainment options. With its central position, many of Rome’s must-see attractions, including the Trevi Fountain, the Colosseum, and Vatican City, are within easy walking distance, while others are just a short taxi ride away. Though it could take weeks to fully experience all that Rome has to offer, even a few days are enough to explore the city's most beautiful sites.
Begin your journey at Piazza Navona, a magnificent square featuring a fountain by Bernini and a popular gathering spot for Romans with its bustling terraced cafés and seasonal fairs. Just a short walk away, you’ll find the Pantheon, the city’s ancient temple, a must-visit on any Roman itinerary. The world-famous Trevi Fountain, a Baroque masterpiece adorned with tritons, winged horses, and drinking snakes, is also nearby, glittering with thousands of coins tossed in by hopeful visitors.
The property is also close to the Palatine Hill and the Roman Forum, the ancient centre of Rome's civil and religious life. Just a few kilometres away are the Sistine Chapel and the Vatican Museums, brimming with Roman sculptures and sarcophagi, both of which are top priorities for first-time visitors. No visit to Rome is complete without seeing St. Peter's Square and St. Peter's Basilica, one of the largest churches ever built.
The Colosseum, the largest amphitheatre ever constructed and a powerful symbol of Imperial Rome, is only a short drive from the apartment—about ten minutes by car. This iconic ruin, part circus and part sports arena, is unmissable, especially now that the visitor route has been extended to include the underground passageways through which gladiators and wild beasts once entered.
Pope Apartment is 16 km from Rome-Ciampino International Airport and 31 km from Rome-Fiumicino International Airport. The apartment is just 40 meters from Piazza Navona, 600 meters from the Pantheon, 2.5 km from the Trevi Fountain, 2.5 km from St. Peter’s Basilica and St. Peter’s Square, 3 km from the Palatine Hill, 3 km from the Colosseum, 3 km from the Roman Forum, 4 km from the Vatican Museums, 4 km from the Sistine Chapel, and 5 km from the Galleria Borghese.
The Property
Located in the church of Sant’Agnese in Agone, attributed to Francesco Borromini, the 350-square-meter Pope Apartment is situated on the southwest side of Piazza Navona, in the heart of the Eternal City. Featuring stunning ceiling frescoes and traditional Baroque décor, the apartment preserves the rich history of the building and its surroundings. Overlooking the Fountain of the Four Rivers, the Pope Apartment can accommodate four guests in two double bedrooms, each complete with its own bathroom.
The beautifully renovated Palazzo Pamphili, now the pride and joy of former Escada Italia power couple Giorgia and Stefano Barbini, is a 17th-century architectural masterpiece steeped in history. It tells the tale of the forbidden romance between Pope Innocent X and his sister-in-law, Olimpia Pamphilj. This exquisite apartment perfectly blends traditional architecture with modern accents in the romantic setting of ancient Rome.
A narrow pathway connects the apartment to the entrance, designed by architect Borromini so that Pope Innocent X could ride his white donkey directly to his quarters from the Vatican. The Pope Apartment features a horseshoe layout, connecting two separate wings of the house. The apartment is a magnificent blend of traditional 17th-century Baroque design and 21st-century modernism.
Each room exudes superior luxury, allowing guests to relax amid plush, soft furnishings and a muted colour scheme. The open-plan layout allows for ample light, highlighting the magnificent marble-framed passages. The apartment's understated blue-grey tones are complemented by unique colour accents in each room. The two bedrooms, each with a unique view and bathroom, are separated by several common spaces where guests can relax together.
The apartment includes a library, a study, and a music room featuring a beautiful grand piano. An elegant dining area with chandeliers enhances the authentic Italian feel. The music room, located on the Via Dell'Anima side of the building, is distinguished by metallic accents, marble passageways, grey walls, and Allegrini Old Testament frescoes that highlight the grand piano. The study is a classic, scholarly space with a custom leather desk, velvet couch, antique books, and elegant lamp accents.
The library, adorned with frescoes depicting the Pamphili family, boasts built-in bookcases, an antique fireplace, and a long velvet bench. A lounge bar is located between the kitchen and the master bedroom, offering a modern rendition of the Roman Triclinium with a built-in bar and TV cabinet. The kitchen and dining area feature gold-backed custom shelves, an antique Seguso Murano glass chandelier, and a peninsula and table made of antique Amazon marble.
The Via Dell’Anima bedroom is enveloped in deep velvet and woven fabric wallpaper, highlighting the incredible floral wall art and complementing the ceiling fresco above. An antique marble fireplace adds further warmth and style to the room. The large adjoining dressing room features custom-designed closets, mirrors, and original sketches that pay homage to the Brioni family. The entrance to the bathroom, which houses the toilet and shower, is cleverly concealed by a hidden door.
The Pope bedroom, the apartment’s master bedroom, was designed for Pope Innocent X himself. This bedroom, complete with an en-suite bathroom, features an elevated bed with an elaborate headboard, which serves as the room’s design centerpiece. A balcony overlooking Piazza Navona and eight-meter-high ceilings adorned with beautiful frescoes enhance the room's grandeur. The en-suite bathroom leads to a lavish Jacuzzi, allowing guests to unwind in style in a room steeped in history.
