Location and Surrounding Area
Casa Farfalla was designed and built by the owners using green techniques, including the use of local materials, an ecological heating and cooling system and programmes for recycling rain water. The name Casa Farfalla (butterfly) comes from the unique design of the hydraulic roof, which opens up on six pistons like the wings of a butterfly. Not only does this allow for natural ventilation but it also gives you the unforgettable experience of literally sleeping under a starlit sky in summer. The house has been recently awarded by National Geographic as one of Italy's most exceptional and ecological houses. It is snuggled into the rock face and the roughly hewn, white marble has been incorporated into the interior to create an awe-inspiring backdrop for the sculptures and works of art that lie within.

Casa Farfalla is set up on the hillside and has magnificent views over the whole of the city of Lucca. Lucca has often been voted one of the world's most desirable cities to live in or visit and is only a ten-minute drive from Casa Farfalla. It is perhaps most famous for its thick, 16th century ramparts which encircle the city and were restored in the 19th century to create a wide, tree-lined walkway. You can walk or cycle on top of the whole length of the walls and discover the wonders of the town within. There are pretty cobbled streets, ancient piazzas, gorgeous churches, glorious renaissance buildings, markets and countless local restaurants, bars and trattorias. Lucca was the birthplace of the Italian opera maestro, Giacomo Puccini and the town often hosts international opera as well as classical music events and rock concerts.

Pisa international airport is 35 km from the house and Florence international airport is about 70 km. Lucca is ten minute drive away, Pisa 15 minutes and 40 minutes to either Florence or Carrara.

The Property. Casa Farfalla sleeps up to 10 guests in five amazing double bedrooms and there is the possibility of sleeping three extra guests on the two sofa beds in the guest house and main house sitting rooms. The bedrooms in themselves are works of art coupled with designer living. There are five bathrooms in total and each one is impeccably designed to the highest of standards. Four of the double bedrooms (two with en suite bathrooms) are in the main house and the remaining double bedroom with en suite bathroom is in the guest house. One of the doubles is on the ground floor and the remaining three (including the master bedroom) are on the first floor.

The guest house offers 2 double bedrooms sharing a bathroom and access to a private, panoramic terrace.

The main house is designed around a spectacular spiral staircase, which forms a centre point for the living area. As with most of the other works of art in the house, it was specifically created for Casa Farfalla by the architect owners. Thanks to the enormous windows, every room in the house is filled with light. The modern kitchen is fully equipped with all of the quality implements that you would expect and the outdoor dining area easily seats 12 people.

The infinity pool has panoramic views and, like the rest of the house, is uniquely designed to blend harmoniously into the hillside. It is 26 metres long and features a play area and a hydro-massage pool at one end.

The gardens cover 10 hectares and filled with olive groves and woodland, ideal for soaking up the peace and tranquillity of the area. There is also a helicopter landing pad on the property.
