Sicily - Selinunte
Villa Primula – Selinunte - Sicily
4 Bedrooms – Pool
A marvellous, Sicilian, country home with an infinity pool set in sweeping gardens.
Location and Surrounding Area. Villa Primula is in a perfect position for discovering the delights of this magical tip of Sicily. It is only a short hop from the long, sandy beaches at Selinunte and the remains of the outstanding ancient Greek acropolis, necropoli and temples.
The name Selinunte is supposedly derived from the Greek for wild celery, which grew in abundance in the area and Sicily is long famed for its culinary traditions. Although very similar to Italian food, it bears witness to the various dominations and has more than a hint of Arabic, French, Greek and Spanish influences. You can't leave Sicily without trying the Pasta Norma with aubergines or the Sicilian pesto made with almonds. For visitors with a sweet tooth, you'll never find a better ricotta based dessert than the cassata or cannoli. Sicilian wine is also superb, the north-western tip is perhaps best known for its sweet dessert wines such as marsala and zibibbo but there are a myriad of other DOC reds and whites to choose from.
For golfers, the Verdura Resort in Sciacca is only half an hour away. Verdura hosted the 2012 Sicilian Open Golf Championship and features three golf courses designed by Kyle Phillips. Campobello di Mazara beach is famous for its kite surf and windsurf activities and is only 20 minutes away by car. For normal, pleasurable beach relaxing, there are stunning stretches of pristine beaches near the villa, the best probably being the Pineta, which is surrounded by the Belice Nature Reserve.
Villa Primula is about an hour's drive from Palermo and Trapani international airports. The Greek temples and acropolis are all within a fifteen minute drive. Selinunte beach is only 5 minutes away, Porto Palo and Tre Fontane beaches are about ten minutes from the house.
The Property. Villa Primula is a treat for cultured tastes and comfortably sleeps up to eight guests in four, large double bedrooms. They are situated on the mezzanine level overlooking the spectacular, open plan living area, which runs along the length of the house. Each bedroom is beautifully decorated, furnished in Sicilian style and they all have a warm, welcoming feel. The bathrooms are equally welcoming and feature spacious vanity units.
The downstairs living area has that wow factor as you step in through the doors. The gorgeous, wooden ceiling is refreshingly high and the sitting area has super-comfortable, leather sofas and armchairs for sinking into. The stone flagged floors are traditional and there is cozy fireplace which makes a wonderful focal point for easy evening conversation. Villa Primula offers both indoor and outdoor dining options, the dining room easily seats eight people and the patio areas outside are wonderful for starlit dinners overlooking the Sicilian countryside. The fully-equipped, country kitchen is in keeping with the rest of the house and has everything a budding or professional chef could wish for.
The lawns are more of a well-kept park and feature palms, cacti, fragrant Mediterranean flowering bushes and ancient, twisted olive trees. Slipping into the infinity pool, your gaze is drawn to the idyllic views. The poolside area is furnished with sun beds and there is a convenient set of easy access steps into the pool, which are marvellous for sitting and sipping summer cocktails.
