Sicily - Selinunte
Villa Anthea – Selinunte - Sicily
2 Bedrooms – Pool
Quirky, zen-like holiday home with private swimming pool.
Location and Surrounding Area. Villa Anthea is perfectly positioned for discovering the wonders of this enchanting area of Sicily. It is only a short drive from the long, sandy beaches at Selinunte and the remains of the outstanding ancient Greek acropolis, necropoli and temples.
The name Selinunte is supposedly derived from the Greek for wild celery, which grew in abundance in the area and Sicily is long famed for its culinary traditions. Although very similar to Italian food, it bears witness to the various dominations and has more than a hint of Arabic, French, Greek and Spanish influences. You can't leave Sicily without trying the Pasta Norma with aubergines or the Sicilian pesto made with almonds. For visitors with a sweet tooth, you'll never find a better ricotta based dessert than the cassata or cannoli. Sicilian wine is also superb, the north-western tip is perhaps best known for its sweet dessert wines such as marsala and zibibbo but there are a myriad of other DOC reds and whites to choose from.
For golfers, the Verdura Resort in Sciacca is only half an hour away. The Verdura Resort hosted the 2012 Sicilian Open Golf Championship and features three golf courses designed by Kyle Phillips. Campobello di Mazara beach is famous for its kite surf and windsurf activities and is only 20 minutes away by car. For normal, pleasurable beach relaxing, there are stunning stretches of pristine beaches near the villa, the best probably being the Pineta, which is surrounded by the Belice Nature Reserve.
Villa Anthea is about an hour's drive from Palermo and Trapani international airports. The Greek temples and acropolis are all within a fifteen minute drive. Selinunte beach is only 5 minutes away by car, while Porto Palo and Tre Fontane beaches are about ten minutes from the house.
The Property. Villa Anthea has an interesting, rather zen-like layout in its separate night-time sleeping area and pretty daytime living area. The two buildings are very close to each other, which means that guests who enjoy a lie-in won't be disturbed by the antics of the early risers in the group. The villa sleeps up to four guests in two double bedrooms with a private bathroom each. The bedrooms are decorated simply in Sicilian country style with lovely pieces of characteristic wooden furniture, which blend in harmoniously with the wood beamed ceilings and stone flagged floors. Both bathrooms have recently been refurbished.
The living area features a cozy living room with a splendid glass wall, which opens the whole room out onto the light and space of the patio, gardens and swimming pool beyond. The idea behind the design of the villa is to give guests as much flexibility and movement as possible. The kitchen is also bright and airy with the large window overlooking the gardens. The adjoining, panoramic dining room comfortably seats up to eight people and nothing could be more pleasurable than after-dinner conversation flowing like good wine whilst being surrounded by immaculate Mediterranean gardens.
The swimming pool offers natural poolside decking with sun loungers, ideal for lazing away the summer afternoons in the shade of an old olive tree.
