Palazzo Arigliano – Santa Maria di Leuca - Apulia

6 Bedrooms – Pool

Location and Surrounding Area. Palazzo Arigliano is situated in the tiny, baroque hamlet of Arigliano on the outskirts of Gagliano del Capo near Santa Maria di Leuca in the southern Salento. The name Leuca comes from the Greek leukos for white, after the magnificent white cliffs in the area. The whole area is famous for its spectacular colours, historical importance and wonderful cuisine. Apulian olive oil is arguably the tastiest in Italy and comes drizzled over roasted cherry tomatoes and freshly cooked fish.

Santa Maria di Leuca, known by locals simply as Leuca, is on the southernmost tip of the Salento peninsula. Here you can watch the sun rise over the eastern Adriatic sea and then watch it set across the western Ionian waters. The coastline varies from high and rocky with secluded sandy coves to long stretches of golden sand. Inland, you'll find pretty dry stone walled lanes winding through ancient olive groves and unexpected white washed villages steeped in tradition.

Otranto was originally a Greek settlement and it's story is best told in the cathedral with its large-scale mosaics dating back to the 12th century and the bones of 813 martyrs are displayed behind the altar.

Beautiful baroque Lecce has to be seen. It's the perfect destination for wandering around little lanes and admiring distinctive 17th century architecture. It has a delightful historical centre and an excavated Roman amphitheatre.

Santa Maria di Leuca is about an hour and a half from Brindisi international airport. Otranto and Lecce are about 50 and 70 kms respectively.

Palazzo Arigliano is the perfect solution for exploring the Salento area whilst staying in an 18th century building. The Palazzo offers peace and privacy and its elegant gardens with small swimming pool guarantee the visitor an idyllic holiday.

The Property. Palazzo Arigliano is just off the main road in the village. The entrance leads into the sitting room which has a pretty sitting area on the right with sofas and armchairs and a relaxing corner on the left with an open fireplace. There is a pair of French windows opening out onto a pretty courtyard with trailing plants and comfortable chairs for outside lounging. The stone steps lead up from the courtyard to a charming double bedroom on the first floor, which overlooks the courtyard below and has its own en-suite bathroom.

There are two double bedrooms on either side of the fireplace in the sitting room; the bedroom on the left also has a small, private studio  and the second bedroom has private access to the garden through two lovely French windows. Both rooms have vaulted ceilings and private bathrooms but only one is en suite.

The living room, dining area and kitchen also have French windows leading out into the garden. The rustic style kitchen is equipped with all modern conveniences whilst retaining a delightful country-house feel. It has a large pantry and laundry room (both with access to the garden).

Quaint steps in the garden by the entrance to the living room lead u p to the fourth double bedroom and its en suite bathroom with two wash basins.

There is an covered outdoor dining area near the kitchen and a pebbled path takes us to the swimming pool near the cottage. The cottage gardens are divided from the house gardens by a wall and reached through a doorway. The cottage has a light, airy feel with its three French windows facing the garden. The large French window in the middle opens into a charming living/dining area, which also has a front door to another courtyard and out onto the lane beyond the property. The two double bedrooms (each with en-suite bathroom and private access to the gardens) are on either side of the living room. The cottage has a small but fully equipped kitchen.
